Elevating The Touch of Linen: How Pre-Wash Creates a Soft and Stable Textile
Technology That Breaks the Boundaries of Materiality
Linen has been a beloved natural fiber for clothing and home textiles for millennia. While its natural texture and breathability offer comfortable wear, untreated 100% linen can feel stiff and rough, it challenging to experience its full premium potential.
The Linen Lab addresses this limitation by applying a sophisticated process called Pre-Wash (or pre-washing) to enhance linen's hand feel and dimensional stability. This ensures the textile is woven to the optimal quality expected by the user.
The Linen Washing Process and Its Function
What is Pre-Wash (Pre-Washing)?
Pre-washing is an essential process applied after fabric manufacturing and before reaching the customer. It involves stabilizing the fibers and improving the hand feel by pre-treating the fabric with moisture and heat.
The Linen Lab's Washing Technology
■ Airo Wash: The fabric is fully saturated with water, and high-pressure air is gently injected to conduct washing without the fabric being excessively folded.
- Minimizes wrinkle generation.
- Improves elasticity for a more supple hand feel.
- Enhances fabric shrinkage control.
- Delivers smoother and more refined surface texture.
■ Spray Wash: Water is sprayed onto the fabric in a mist form, followed by finishing in a rotary high-temperature dryer.
-
Removes surface impurities effectively.
-
Softens the hand feel and strengthens the natural texture.
-
Contributes to improved shrinkage control.
■ Tumble Wash: The fabric is fully submerged in water, put through an initial dewatering step, and finished in a rotary high-temperature dryer.
- Achieves a significantly softer hand feel.
- Forms a natural surface texture.
- Highly effective in improving shrinkage control.
■ Enzyme Wash: Utilizes the same process as Tumble Washing but adds enzymes to react with the natural fibers.
- Delivers superior softness.
- Maximizes elasticity.
-
Optimizes shrinkage control.
Each process transforms the linen into a supple, elastic fabric, delivering the refined quality and tactile pleasure expected of premium linen.

The Dual Effect of Washing: Maximizing Hand Feel and Stability
The Linen Lab's pre-washing process serves two primary objectives.
Hand Feel Improvement: From Stiffness to Elastic Softness
After applying an appropriate amount of fabric softener and undergoing processing like Airo Wash or Tumble Wash, the linen fabric becomes more elastic and significantly softer. Furthermore, residual impurities remaining on the fabric are effectively removed.
Fiber Stabilization: Preserving Form and Durability through Controlled Shrinkage
Untreated linen shows a shrinkage rate of approximately 5% to 7% when exposed to water, making it prone to deformation after use. However, pre-washed linen, refined through meticulous washing processes, achieves size stability by reducing the shrinkage rate to 2% to 4%. This process ensures that the fabric maintains its form and tactile elegance even after repeated washing, providing customers with a fabric that has minimized wash-induced shrinkage.
The Linen Lab's Strict Quality Standards
Quality Management Protocol
- Application of the optimal washing protocol tailored to the fabric characteristics and intended use for all linen.
- Providing a soft and stable linen experience through the complete removal of residual impurities.
- Maintenance of fabric shape and hand feel even after repeated washing.
The Value of the Completed Linen Hand Feel
- Realization of softness, elasticity, and stability focused on the wearer's experience.
- Stabilization of shrinkage rate against water washing (minimization of deformation after washing).
Through these rigorous processes, The Linen Lab continuously elevates the premium linen experience expected by customers. The finished linen emerges as a refined product, exceptionally soft, stable, and resilient, retaining its form even after washing, giving customers confidence in its long-term use.
