How opaque is this gorgeous fabric? If I make a dress, will I need a slip? I normally wash all my clothes in cold water, but usually for sewing I pre-wash in hot water. My weight tends to fluctuate a bit so I don’t want any shrinkage after the fact. How much is it likely to shrink during a hot water pre-wash?
Since this is a lightweight linen, it isn't entirely opaque. However, because the color is quite dark, you likely won't need a slip or inner lining for a dress.
Regarding shrinkage, you can expect it to shrink about 4–5% with a hot water wash.
If you are worried about the fit, here is a tip to stabilize the fabric with less effort: lightly spray the surface with water and put it in the dryer for 10–15 minutes. This will pre-shrink the fabric so that future shrinkage is minimal (only 1–2%).
